Student Engagement Fund

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) is launching a new competition to fund student-led initiatives.

As graduate students, you know best what your needs are, and GPS is here to empower you to meet those needs.

Graduate students in the Schulich School of Music, Faculties of Arts, Law, or Education are eligible for up to $1500 in funding for initiatives that address one or both of the following:

  • Connectivity and community building between graduate students.
  • Professional development that will support degree progression and/or transition to post-degree career for a group/community of students.

The initiatives must take place between January 1st and April 15th, 2023. Projects should benefit a group/community of students and are not intended for individual development. Up to 5 projects will be awarded grants from the Student Engagement Fund this year. Applications are due November 30th, 2022.

What kind of projects are eligible for funding?

Projects should align with at least one of the themes that make up the Individual Development Framework. Preference will be given to interdepartmental projects. Examples of projects that are eligible for funding include discussion groups, cultural or educational social outings, invited speaker series, workshops, industry events, professional skills training, research forums and more! Check out the Application Evaluation Rubric for more details.

Who may apply?

Graduate students from the Schulich school of Music, Faculties of Arts, Law, or Education may apply as individuals or as a team. The project must be student-led, however, faculty or staff may be included as collaborators. In the case of a team-led initiative, the applicant must be a graduate student.

How can I apply?

To apply, you must fill out the online application form and submit a 1-page project proposal and a 1-page budget. Proposals must include a description of the initiative (the “what”), an explanation of the rationale (the “why”), an action plan (the “how”) and the expected outcomes.

What kinds of expenses are allowed?

A detailed, 1-page budget explaining how the funds will be spent is required. Eligible expenses include speaker fees, transportation costs, food and non-alcoholic beverages, tickets or event fees, travel costs, honorariums, etc. GPS reserves the right to determine eligible costs.

When will winners be announced?

Winners will be announced December 20th, 2022.
