Research Interests: Dr. Susan Law teaches a course on health policy and evidence-based decision-making for graduate students in family medicine. She is based at St. Mary's Hospital, a community-based McGill-affiliated institution, where she is Vice-President of Academic Affairs and director of the St. Mary's Research Centre. Research activities at St. Mary's typically include collaboration with McGill investigators and others in areas such as family and community medicine, epidemiology, health services research, mental health, patient experiences and engagement, quality improvement, and clinical research - particularly in oncology and maternal-child health. Susan has a professional masters in health administration from the University of Toronto and obtained her PhD at the University of London (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine). Her thesis was on priority-setting in the context of the market reforms in the UK, with case studies on stroke care in two jurisdictions.
Dr. Law has extensive experience as a health services manager in both Canada and the UK. She has experience on the research funding side where she was previously the Vice-President of Research at the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation. Her experience in research was initially obtained in the UK where she participated in qualitative studies of the role of evidence in changing clinical practice based at the University of Oxford. In Canada, she has been a senior scientist with the Agence d’évaluation des technologies et des modes d'intervention en santé (AETMIS) in Montreal where she completed studies related to high-tech home care. Susan is currently involved in a number of research projects including mental health, patient experiences and engagement, health informatics in primary care, and a Kazakhstan government/World Bank project in Kazakhstan on health research infrastructure. She is the principal investigator for the Canadian health experiences initiative - part of an international collaboration investigating peoples' experiences of health and illness, where the results are presented as online modules for patients and professionals about the range of lived experiences using video and audio clips of people's first hand stories from qualitative interviews. The first modules will be on experiences of family caregiving, breast cancer in women, and immigrant mental health. She is also involved in a new intersectoral research collaboration on Aboriginal health in northern Quebec.
