Yasmine Elmi, who will enter the Master of Science program at our Department of Family Medicine, is among the 20 newly selected McCall MacBain Scholars at McGill, Canada’s comprehensive leadership scholarship program for master’s and professional studies.
Yasmine is enrolled in the Translational and Molecular Medicine program at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine. At the start of the pandemic, she co-founded an initiative that matched more than 100 first-year students to peer mentors; the number of matches is expected to double this year. She is also involved with her program’s student association and with the Federation of Black Canadians youth council, where she led a team of outreach volunteers. Previously, she helped fundraise for a Somali community foundation, participated in Model United Nations conferences, and played competitive rugby. Yasmine has held part-time jobs and spent last summer conducting research with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
