Char Lewis-Sutherland
Biography: 

Char Lewis-Sutherland (they/she) has over two decades of experience collaborating with students, staff, and faculty at McGill University to champion inclusive living, learning, and working environments. As a manager in Residence Life, they oversaw a longstanding equity education program. Developing expertise in program design, evaluation, and socially just assessment, Char was a project analyst on Student Services’ evaluation team, where they co-chaired the drafting of the unit’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism and co-led the first Black student needs assessment.

At Teaching and Learning Services (now Teaching and Academic Programs), Char served on the leadership team, guiding equity initiatives and co-chairing the EDI Working Group. Currently in the Office of the Provost, they support faculty in developing anti-racist and inclusive pedagogical practices, co-lead McGill’s Black Employee Resource Group, and advise on social sustainability for the Sustainability Education Fellows program.

Char holds a BA in Gender, Sexuality, Feminism, and Social Justice and an MEd in Educational Studies, with research on relationality in educational leadership and educator professional growth. Their contributions have earned awards such as McGill’s Equity and Community Engagement Award (2021) and the SALTISE Best Practices and Pedagogical Innovators Award (2023).
