Virtual Exhibition in McGill Libraries Featuring Prof. Reznikov’s Research
The Department of Bioengineering invites you to come to the McGill Libraries and examine digital 3D reconstructions of rare objects preserved in various Montreal museums! Using touch tables the size of a TV screen installed at the Schulich Library of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Engineering, and the McLennan Library Building, you can zoom and rotate 3D models as part of a virtual natural history museum.
Prof. Ignea receives two Faculty Scholar Awards
The Department of Bioengineering congratulates Professor Codruta Ignea on receiving two prestigious Faculty Scholar Awards:

Members of marginalized groups are at disproportionate risk in earthquakes, study finds
Members of socially and economically marginalized groups in Montreal and Ottawa-Gatineau are at disproportionate risk in earthquakes, a new study has found.
Co-authored by McGill civil engineering professor Daniele Malomo, the study is the first in Canada to examine earthquake vulnerability through the lens of equity.
Ultrasound unlocks a safer, greener way to make hydrogels
Researchers at McGill University, in collaboration with Polytechnique Montréal, pioneered a new way to create hydrogels using ultrasound, eliminating the need for toxic chemical initiators. This breakthrough offers a faster, cleaner and more sustainable approach to hydrogel fabrication, and produces hydrogels that are stronger, more flexible and highly resistant to freezing and dehydration.
Congratulations Prof. Mahshid! 2025 PerkinElmer Analytical Sciences and Spectroscopy Award
The Department of Bioengineering would like to congratulate Professor Sara Mahshid on being selected as the recipient of the 2025
Bioengineering Department Retreat at McGill's Gault Nature Reserve
The Department of Bioengineering enjoyed a fun and enriching retreat at the Gault Nature Reserve on Monday, April 28. Faculty and staff came together to connect and share ideas in the reserve’s beautiful natural setting. A big thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the day memorable. The department now looks ahead to another exciting year! (April 2025)
Third Edition of the Sustainability and Synthetic Biology Conference
We're excited to announce that the third edition of the Sustainability and Synthetic Biology Conference is coming up!

McGill Architect attributes success of his career with the broad set of skills acquired at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture
Jerry Lieu (BScArch’71, BArch’73) always admired the work of world-renowned architect, I.M. Pei. “I think there were a lot of us Chinese architecture students who did. What I appreciated was his very practical approach. Throughout my career, I’ve found myself drawn to a practical approach.”
John Dealy taught students to go out and make the world a better place
Pamela Dealy knew that her father was born knowing he wanted to be a chemical engineer. She knew that he worked at McGill for 40 years. She knew that he retired a Professor Emeritus in 2004. Most of all, she knew that even though he was Dean from 1994 to 1999, his true passion was teaching and helping students with their research.
John Bishop led the way to a more sustainable world
John Bishop (BEng’47) was ahead of his time. An environmentalist before most people knew the word, he was an active outdoorsman who took deliberate steps to protect and preserve the land. He got involved in upholding the things he believed in, living an engaged, productive and healthy 98 years.
