Hello prospective and current Teaching Assistants! The following page is a helpful resource for Graduate Students interested in, or currently holding, a Teaching Assistant position in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, in the Faculty of Education.

What is a Teaching Assistant?

A Teaching Assistant (TA) is a graduate student appointed to assist a Course Supervisor with the instruction and evaluation of students in a course. A teaching assistant works under the guidance and supervision of the Course Supervisor who is responsible for setting the course objectives, content and method of instruction as well as final grades and grading practices of the course.

All those hired as Teaching Assistants at McGill University are required to be a member of the Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill (AGSEM) - McGill's Teaching Union. For further information information about membership and governance please visit the AGSEM website.

Postings

All Teaching Assistant positions are now posted through Workday on McGill’s Careers Website. Please refer to the Guide for candidates (External and Former Employees) or (Internal).

NOTE: 

IF YOU ARE A CURRENT EMPLOYEE at McGill, with an active appointment in Workday who has successfully logged into Workday with an @mcgill.ca account, you must apply as a "Current employee." You must be signed into VPN using your @mcgill.ca email account prior to logging into Workday in order to be able to apply. 

IF YOU ARE NOT A CURRENT EMPLOYEE you must apply as an “External candidate." When you click on "apply" for a position of interest, you will then be prompted to sign into Workday. At this point, you must create an account with the use of a personal email address exclusively (i.e. @gmail.com, @yahoo.ca, etc). DO NOT create an account using your @mail.mcgill.ca address at this time as this is currently causing a technical issue.

Please note that ECP students will receive an email from our ECP Student Listserv notifying them when positions have been posted throughout the year. If you are an ECP Student, please check your @mail.mcgill.ca email for updates.

Positions are posted three times/year, by the following dates:

Positions held during Posted by AND NO LATER THAN Deadlines to Apply
Fall semesters/Full year Third Monday of May, for a minimum duration of fourteen (14) days

Winter semesters Third Monday of October, for a minimum duration of fourteen (14) days
Summer semesters Second Monday of March, for a minimum duration of fourteen (14) days

All applications must be submitted online through McGill’s Careers WebsitePlease be sure to review the qualifications BEFORE electing to apply.

If you are interested in more than one position, please remember you must: 

  • Apply to each position individually.
  • Please feel free to upload your CV in your application, which is often helpful for the instructor of the course.

Forms and Important Dates

For Current Teaching Assistants in ECP, please take note of the following deadlines:

AGSEM Union Membership Form - English (.pdf)

Complete & submit to AGSEM via email at .The AGSEM - Teaching Assistants' membership form must be completed and returned directly to AGSEM - Teaching Assistants: mail [at] agsem-aeedem.ca

 To be submitted at the same time the contract is accepted in Workday.

TA Workload Form (fillable .pdf)

Complete with the Course Instructor and submit to the ECP Administrative Office by the end of the drop/add period.


A mid-term evaluation is also required on the TA Workload form. Forms completed at the start of the semester will be redistributed to TAs for mid-term reviews with the Course Lecturers.

Fall 2024 Semester DEADLINE is Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 5:00PM (TAs and Instructors are to retain an official copy for use in October, see below)

Fall 2024 Mid-Term TA Workload form review deadline: Friday, October 11, 2024 at 5:00PM (TAs and instructor review their original  Workload form - a second set of signatures are required).

Winter 2025 Semester DEADLINE is Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at 5:00PM (TAs and Instructors are to retain an official copy for use in February, see below)

Winter 2025 Mid-Term TA Workload form review deadline: Friday, February 28, 2025 at 5:00PM (TAs and instructor review their original Workload form - a second set of signatures are required).

TA Final Performance Evaluation Form (pdf) Complete at the end of the semester.

Fall 2024 Semester DEADLINE is Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at 5:00PM

Winter 2025 Semester DEADLINE is Friday, April 18, 2025 at 5:00PM

Please note that all of the forms above must be completed and signed by the instructor and teaching assistant before submitting.

Please bring the original copy of each form to the front desk of Room 614, Education Building. (Due to the current closure of McGill buildings these forms should be emailed).


FAQ

What is the hourly rate for TAs?

Rates of Pay as of:

  • First Sunday of August 2024: $36.25/hour, First Sunday of August 2025: $37.34/hour  -  vacation pay (6%) and statutory holiday compensation (3.6%) is included

When will I be notified if I am offered a position?

Approximately 35 days from the application deadline.  Please note only selected applicants will be contacted. A notice of offer will be sent to all selected applicants' via their Workday profile.

Can I hold multiple Teaching Assistantships?

Yes. As long as the total combined hours for all TAships does not exceed 180 hours in one semester. The Department prefers to offer TAships to as many students as possible each semester. It is rare that one student would hold more than one position during one term.

Will I have to attend the course lectures?

A majority of the positions will require class attendance. If you have been offered a teaching assistantship, please check with the instructor whether this will be a requirement, and if so, please verify that you are available during class hours before accepting a position.
