Critical Care Fellowship
The Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesia and Pediatrics offer a two year program in Critical Care which meets the Royal College requirements for training in Critical Care. The McGill program is a multidisciplinary approach with faculty from all the base specialties. To be eligible for the program, applicants must have completed three years of an accredited program in surgery, medicine, anesthesia, emergency medicine or pediatrics. One year of Critical Care training must be completed at the end of the base specialty training, but the other year can include training in the base specialty, but only after the completion of three years of residency training. Any training during the base specialty must also be pre-approved by the Program Director in Critical Care.
The Critical Care training program includes 10 months in multi-disciplinary ICUs and is divided up among the units at the Royal Victoria, Montreal General and Jewish General Hospitals.
The other 14 months are used to obtain experience in cardiovascular, Neuro-ICU, trauma and pediatrics. A 6 month elective for research is also a possibility. The strength of the McGill program is the academic activities of its faculty. The program is designed to develop a general experience in critical care, although emphasis is placed on developing academically and scientifically oriented critical care physicians.
