BCom Managing for Sustainability Program Wins Catalyst Award

Published: 19 April 2016

On April 14, 2016, Desautels’ Bachelor of Commerce Managing for Sustainability (MSUS) Major and Concentration Programs were awarded the Catalyst Award for Sustainability in Education. Now in their 6th edition, the Catalyst Awards recognize the diverse efforts dedicated to sustainability at McGill University. The two MSUS programs, officially launched in September 2014, align with the university's sustainability vision of educating, preparing, and equipping McGill graduates to address pressing and complex challenges.

The selection committee recognized the cross disciplinary approach that has been taken to advance sustainability in management curricula. The programs were conceived and are currently managed through a collaborative partnership between the Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill School of Environment, and Department of Geography. A team of dedicated staff and faculty across campuses have been responsible for growing the program and collecting feedback from students, instructors, and community stakeholders to ensure continuous improvements.

Dr. Steve Maguire, Desautels Professor of Strategy & Organization and Director of the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM) accepted the award on behalf of the many faculty, staff, and student collaborators. He acknowledged the many individuals and units who contributed along the way, noting that “the success of these programs is because of an inspiring collaboration”.

The MSUS programs have been designed to ensure that Bachelor of Commerce students can graduate with a strong understanding of what sustainability means and how it can relate to their particular stream of study. As Maguire pointed out, “the programs are teaching students to view business through a sustainability lens”. Students pursuing marketing, finance, accounting, operations, information systems, or strategy paths are able to view their functional in a more holistic way.
