McGill University welcomes government support for new hospital centres

Published: 24 March 2005

McGill University welcomes the decision announced today by the Government of Quebec on the location of the new Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal at 1000 Saint-Denis and confirmation of funding for three major hospital projects in Montreal, including the McGill University Health Centre's new campus at the Glen Yard.

"The new MUHC, as well as the CHUM and Sainte-Justine projects, combine to make one of North America's largest and most exciting hospital initiatives," said McGill Vice-Principal (Administration and Finance) Morty Yalovsky. "We are fortunate to have such a concentration of medical expertise in Montreal and we look forward to continuing to strengthen the partnerships between McGill and the U of M and our hospitals, and to work with the MUHC and all partners to deliver the project on time and on budget."

The MUHC is a merger of five teaching hospitals affiliated with McGill University — the Montreal Children's Hospital, Montreal General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital and Montreal Neurological Hospital, as well as the Montreal Chest Institute.

The Research Institute of the MUHC is the largest research institute of its kind in Canada, with over 500 researchers and some 550 graduate and postgraduate students. One of the hallmarks of the MUHC is the close integration of research and clinical practice, ensuring that patients benefit from the latest research-based knowledge.

Close to 2,000 people train at the MUHC, including some 815 medical and surgical residents, 150 medical students, 800 nurses and hundreds of allied health students. All physicians at the MUHC are cross-appointed to the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University.

Currently located on five sites, the MUHC is developing a new 43-acre campus located on the Glen Yard in the central area of Montreal at the boundaries of Westmount and Notre Dame de Grace. It will be complemented by the Mountain Campus, which will comprise a modernized Montreal General Hospital and the Montreal Neurological Hospital.

The new health centre will be designed to the highest standards of hospital construction. It will provide a comfortable, modern healing environment with the capacity to accommodate the tools of modern medicine. It is scheduled to open in 2010.
