McGill professional school invites media to centenary

McGill's Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS) turns 100 this May. To celebrate, the GSLIS is holding several talks and a panel discussion entitled "The Past, Present and Future of Library and Information Studies."

Featured speakers will include Anthony Masi, McGill's deputy provost & CIO, Joanne Gard Marshall, dean of the University of North Carolina School of Information & Library Science, and Lise Bissonnette, CEO of the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec.

Crisis in scholarly communication — The pros and cons of digital research journals examined during McGill symposium

The electronic distribution of research journals has been nothing short of revolutionary. The digitization of journals has enabled scholars from around the world to access a multitude of research publications with the click of a mouse.

Yet progress has its problems. Large publishers are using the new technology to boost revenues by charging libraries high fees for online access to journals. The pros and cons of digital publications will be examined by library authorities during an all-day session entitled "Symposium on the Crisis in Scholarly Communication – For the Greater Good: Open Access and Institutional Repositories."
