Mining Engineering
What is Mining Engineering?

Mining is the removal of minerals from the ground to provide the raw materials and energy resources needed to sustain modern civilization.
Mining Engineering is a complex and interdisciplinary field that includes elements of geological, civil, mechanical, and materials engineering. A mining engineer ensures that mining is carried out efficiently and safely while maintaining sustainability and minimal environmental impact.

Mining Engineers design, operate, manage, and reclaim mines and mining facilities for both open pit and underground deposits.
There is a severe shortage of mining engineers worldwide due to growing demand for minerals in developed and developing countries. As a world class producer of many important commodities such as gold, copper, nickel and oil sands, Canada is likely to remain a leader in the foreseeable future. Mining engineering students can look forward to a secure and well-paid career in a dynamic and challenging industry. The mining industry offers career paths that provide the flexibility to work in and move between a diverse range of jobs in mining regions and major cities around the world. Why McGill Mining Engineering?

McGill University’s Mining Engineering Program is the oldest in Canada and has traditionally had the highest reputation for excellence. Graduates in this program are found in top management positions of many Canadian mining companies, and have been responsible for many important breakthroughs and innovations witnessed in the industry.
The key to our program is the dedicated staff whose expertise includes rock mechanics and mine planning.
One of the highlights of the undergraduate program includes its co-operative nature, which aims to reshape undergraduate education by offering the students the opportunity to gain industrial work experience during the course of their studies and be exposed to the constantly evolving high-technology mine environment.
Graduate students take advantage of the knowledge, equipment and industrial links that the Faculty has with industry. Their research is highly relevant and groundbreaking. COSMO, a Lab based in McGill Mining which deals with strategic mine planning, and Geo-Mechanics and EMERG labs as well as Mine Design & Numerical Modelling Lab conducting unique and pioneering research in mining technology and mining operation, are excellent examples of the international and intellectual scope of the research in McGill Mining.
