Amazon Go, convenience stores that eliminate the check-out process, are coming to Canada. Customers can use a debit card, credit card or payment-enabled phone to enter, select and buy items, and simply walk out of the store. Amazon introduced the cashierless stores in the U.S. in 2018 and is now opening locations in Calgary and Toronto. "The growth in this sector is remarkable, with a significant amount of investment pouring in," says Professor Maxime Cohen in interview with CBC.

But the Bensadoun School of Retail Management (BSRM) is helping them do it. Since spring 2023, it has been hosting regional networking events that meet Quebec businesspeople where they live and work. Regional roadshows aim to help SMEs become omni-channel retailers, and consist of workshops that showcase the innovative research happening at BSRM.

Poets & Quants has named its MBAs to Watch list for 2023, and three Desautels graduates made the cut. The magazine and website asks business schools to nominate some of their top students for consideration for the list, and from those nominations, 135 students have been selected as MBAs to Watch. They represent many of the world’s top universities, and MBAs to Watch have often gone on to careers at top consulting firms. This year, we celebrate McGill’s Matias Font, Shahriar (Sha) Asadi and Larry Komrower for being selected!

Donna Angela Roper, Professor of Computer Science with over 35 years of dedicated service, has been honoured with the inaugural McGill Desautels Award for IS Women in Academia. Heading the eCommerce School at the University of Panama, her work and influence extend beyond academia. She has worked as a consultant and researcher in health literacy and women’s participation in the engineering area to which she has made significant contributions.

McGill’s International Masters Program for Managers (IMPM) recently took steps to help 2sLGBTQIA+ people do this by launching a scholarship of up to $10,000 USD for leaders actively involved in promoting diversity and inclusion in their organization, communities, country, or region.

WestJet takes over Sunwing, but competition from Air Canada will limit negative impact for consumers
In May 2023, WestJet completed a takeover of Sunwing, a Canadian charter airline and the following month, it announced it was shutting down Swoop, its own discount carrier. The company’s CEO says it’s a good thing for customers, but some think it could push prices higher.
