Dr. Akbarzadeh Shafaroudi, an Assistant Professor specializing in Machine Design, is affiliated with both the Bioresource Engineering Department and the Mechanical Engineering Department at McGill University. Furthermore, he holds an Honorary Research Associate position in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of New Brunswick.

Dr. Akbarzadeh Shafaroudi's academic journey brought him to McGill University's Bioresource Engineering Department in 2015, following a successful tenure as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Mechanical Engineering Departments at both McGill University and the University of New Brunswick, spanning approximately two and a half years. His doctoral studies, focused on multiphysics simulations of smart advanced materials, culminated in a PhD earned from the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of New Brunswick in 2013.

Before his PhD, he completed his Master's degree in Solid Mechanics within the Mechanical Engineering Department at Amirkabir University of Technology in 2009. As an undergraduate, he acquired his Bachelor's degree in Solid Mechanics from the Mechanical Engineering Department at Isfahan University of Technology in 2007.

Current research:

Professor Hamid Akbarzadeh is a Canada Research Chair (CRC Tier 2) in Multifunctional Metamaterials, an Associate Professor in the Solid Mechanics and Bio-inspired advanced material and structure design in the Bioresource Engineering Department, and an Associate Member in the Mechanical Engineering Department of McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Professor Akbarzadeh exploits Fundamentals of solid mechanics, computational multiscale and multiphysics simulation, and Advanced manufacturing (3D printing and laser engraving) to develop next generation of architected multifunctional metamaterials and meta-structures with unrivalled multi-physical properties

Areas of interest:

Inspired by biological systems where structural properties are integrated with sensing, actuating, and self-healing, Dr. Akbarzadeh Shafaroudi’s research interest is on advanced multifunctional materials and structures. Due to the multidisciplinary framework of multifunctional materials, the research spans mechanical, civil, biological, and electrical engineering concepts and is also of interest to material scientists, mathematicians, and physicists. Dr. Akbarzadeh Shafaroudi is specifically interested in the multiphysics and multiscale simulation of multiferroic cellular solids, smart and biocomposites, graded biological materials, and advanced metamaterials using theoretical/computational and experimental methodologies. The application of the research is in energy harvesting, structural health monitoring, renewable energy production, and sustainable design for various industrial sectors including automotive, energy, agriculture, aerospace, and construction.
