Your academic standing is a general indication of how well you are doing in your degree. It is also used to determine whether you are permitted to continue in your degree, and if there are any conditions attached to your registration (e.g. limits on how many courses you can take per term).

It is your responsibility to review your academic standing on your unofficial Minerva transcript each term and reach out to your assigned degree advisor if you need support.

When you start your undergraduate degree, you are in Satisfactory Standing. At the end of each term (Fall and Winter), your academic standing is calculated based on the final grades that are available on your Minerva record, your GPAs (see table below) and Faculty of Science regulations. If you defer and exam or receive a course extension, it may not be possible to calculate your final academic standing by the dates below (in such cases, your standing will normally show as "Must clear Ks, Ls or Supps" until final grades are submitted).

  • Fall term standings are generated in January (these will normally be "Interim" standings)
  • Winter term standings are generated in May (these will normally be final standings and determine whether you may continue in your degree in the following academic year).

  • Interim Unsatisfactory

  • You may continue in your degree, but you must carry a reduced load (maximum 14 credits per term);
  • You are strongly advised to consult a program advisor before withdrawal deadlines about your course selection for the Winter term;
  • You should see your assigned degree advisor to discuss degree planning.
  • Unsatisfactory
CGPA of 1.49 or lower
  • You have failed to meet the minimum standards set by the Faculty and you cannot continue in your degree;
  • If you were already registered in courses for the Summer term, your registration will be maintained, but your standing in Summer will be noted as "Restricted to Summer Registration." You will not be able to register in courses beyond the Summer term (even if your grades in the Summer term result in Probationary or Satisfactory standing for that term);
  • If you were registered in Fall or Winter courses for the following term, you will be deregistered from these courses;
  • You must appeal for readmission if you wish to resume your studies. Readmission is at the discretion of the Faculty, it is neither automatic nor guaranteed.
  • Incomplete standing

An Incomplete Standing is generated in instances when a TGPA cannot be calculated because of missing grades, or grades such as L, K, NA or NR.

You should meet with your assigned degree advisor to discuss your academic situation. You may be encouraged to apply for readmission as a pre-emptive measure in case your CGPA falls below a 2.0 once your final grades are available.
