About Resonance

Why Resonance?

At the Victor Philip Dahdaleh Institute of Genomic Medicine (VPDI), researchers come from diverse scientific backgrounds. We share a common foundation in genomics, but we each speak in different disciplinary dialects. A compelling talk in one field can leave colleagues in another confused, disengaged, or simply lost. Too often, brilliant work gets buried under slides, jargon, or assumptions about what the audience already knows.

“Even senior researchers get lost in translation, it’s no surprise that students face the same challenge. Resonance gives them the tools to rise above it.”
Prof. Corinne Maurice, Resonance Supervisor

Program Structure

The public speaking training program runs over two semesters, each with a distinct theme and communication focus:

  • Fall Semester: “Teach me something I don’t know… in 5 minutes”

Focused on learning to deliver concise, impactful short talks, this semester trains you to distill complex ideas into accessible insights.

  • Winter Semester: “Build your next high-stakes presentation”

You’ll work on a full-length scientific presentation (10-12 minutes) suited for conferences or job-talks, with a focus on narrative structure, visuals, and confident delivery.

Each semester includes:

  • Three evening workshops (5:00–7:30 PM, with pizza) led by science communication expert Dr. Andrew Churchill

Dr. Andrew Chapman giving a talk

  • Small-group coaching sessions with experienced trainees and faculty

  • A final live showcase with prizes for standout communication skills

  • Professional video recording of talks to feature on the VPDI website

“Andy guided me through every facet of presenting—from shaping my message to commanding the room with voice and presence. But what mattered most was how he believed in me when I didn’t. That support made all the difference.”
— Atia Amin, North American 3MT Winner
