Child & Adolescent Subspecialty Program

Published: 25 January 2013

The Division of Child Psychiatry of the McGill University Department of Psychiatry is pleased to announce that its application for recognition of its training program was approved by the Royal College of Canada! The Division can now train new child psychiatrists under the new Subspecialty in Child Psychiatry created by the Royal College.

The Division of Child Psychiatry of the McGill University Department of Psychiatry regroups practitioners and researchers from three hospital centers: the Douglas Hospital, the Jewish General Hospital and the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The Division has a long history and a solid knowledge-base stemming from research and practice. Recognition of the training program allows the Division to remain a leader in its field.

Dr. Ruth Russell has been appointed Director of the new training program and brings with her a wealth of experience in psychiatric education both locally and nationally.  She has successfully met the challenge to develop the application for approval by the Royal College. Drs. Lily Hechtman, Johanne Renaud, Lara Stern and Judy Vogel were very important in assisting Dr Russell with this colossal undertaking. Drs Ammar Albanna and Rachel Kronick participated as residents. Not to mention the invaluable administrative assistance of Andrea Fleiszer, Maria Schuepp and Jenny Therriault. We cordially thank everyone for their significant contribution.

Drs Lily Hechtman, Director of Research of the Division, Natalie Grizenko, Chief of Child Psychiatry at the Douglas Hospital, and Jaswant Guzder, Chief of Child Psychiatry at the Jewish General Hospital, shared the leadership of the Division with heart during the two years of preparation for submission to the Royal College.

The Division of Child Psychiatry of the McGill University Department of Psychiatry intends to actively participate in the new challenges of our time in Child Psychiatry.

Dr. Martin Gauthier
Academic Director of the Division of Child Psychiatry, McGill University
