Appointment of the Dean of Students

Dear members of the McGill community,

It is my pleasure to announce that Tony Mittermaier will be McGill’s new Dean of Students. The McGill University Board of Governors approved his appointment at its meeting of May 22, 2025, following the work and recommendation of the Advisory Committee for the Selection of a Dean of Students. Prof. Mittermaier’s five-year renewable term will begin on June 1, 2025.

Prof. Mittermaier has held the position as Interim Dean of Students since September 2024 and previously served as Associate Dean (Student Affairs) in the Faculty of Science. He brings with him an extensive academic background and a dedication to fostering student success and well-being within the McGill community.

He has been a member of McGill’s Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science since 2005, where he is currently a full professor. He leads a laboratory focused on biomolecular structure, function and dynamics, where new tools are developed to advance our understanding of biological macromolecules. In recognition of his contributions to chemical biology, he was awarded the Chemical Biology/Medicinal Chemistry Lectureship award by the Canadian Society for Chemistry in 2021.

The mandate of Office of the Dean of Students is to enhance, improve and promote students’ academic and personal success. The Dean oversees student rights and responsibilities, academic integrity, academic advising, the student disciplinary process and student recognition.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the members of the Advisory Committee for the Selection of a Dean of Students, and to everyone in the community who shared their comments and advice during the search process.

With best regards,

Christopher Manfredi

Provost and Executive Vice-President (Academic)
