Director and Principal Investigator

Dr. Julio F Fiore Jr., BSc (PT), MSc, PhD

Dr. Julio F Fiore Jr is an Outcome Scientist and Associate Professor at McGill University's Department of Surgery. His highly productive and internationally recognized research program is dedicated to improving the outcomes of surgical patients. His academic career builds on over 15 years of research training in prestigious institutions in Brazil (Federal University of Sao Paulo), Australia (Melbourne University) and Canada (McGill University). Dr. Fiore has published extensively in the fields of surgery, perioperative care, and outcome measurement. He has delivered presentations to audiences worldwide, received multiple awards, participated in the development of perioperative care guidelines, and accrued significant grant funding to pursue his research program. Among his leadership positions, he currently directs McGill’s Surgical Scientist Program and the Master’s Program in Surgical Outcomes Research.

Mak Pook, BHSc

Mak Pook graduated from McMaster University in 2019 with an Honours Health Sciences (BHSc) degree. Currently, Mak is a doctoral student in Surgical & Interventional Sciences at McGill University, supervised by Dr. Julio Fiore. Their research interests include postoperative pain and opioid prescribing, with a focus on clinical trials and qualitative research methods. In particular, Mak is interested in the sociocultural factors that influence perceptions of postoperative pain, both clinician and patient pain perceptions and how this impacts opioid prescribing and consumption.

Ghadeer Olleik completed her BSc in Pharmacy and a Master’s degree in Clinical Pharmacy and Epidemiology in Lebanon. Given her interest in surgical research, she completed her MSc and is currently pursuing a PhD degree in Surgical & Interventional Sciences at McGill University.

Francesca Fermi, MD

Francesca Fermi is a resident in General Surgery from Italy (San Raffaele Hospital, Milan) and a Master's student in Surgical and Interventional Sciences. She is working on a Psychometric assessment of PROMIS-29 as a measure of recovery after colorectal surgery. Her interests mainly lie in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.

Philip Nguyen-Powanda is a Master’s student in the Surgical & Interventional Sciences program at McGill University, where he was awarded the Graduate Excellence Fellowship. He holds a BSc in Anatomy and Cell Biology from McGill University. His research interests include perioperative pain management, healthcare technology, and patient-centered innovation in anesthesia and surgery.

Joao Victor Medeiros de Cerqueira is a Master's student in Surgical and Interventional Sciences. He earned his medical degree and pursued an orthopedic residency in Brazil. His current research focuses on predictors of post-discharge pain and satisfaction with pain management after colorectal surgery.

Ali Roosta is a Master's student in the Surgical and Interventional Sciences program at McGill University. His research interests include postoperative pain and opioid prescribing following laparoscopic colorectal surgery, as well as value-based healthcare research. He currently holds a BSc in Nutritional Sciences from McGill University.

Aylin Mansimova, BSc

Aylin Mansimova is a Master’s student in the Surgical and Interventional Sciences program at McGill University. She graduated with a BSc in Nursing from McGill University in 2023. Throughout nursing school and after graduation, she worked on the General Surgery floor at the Montreal General Hospital and witnessed the recovery of patients after various abdominal surgeries. This hands-on experience sparked her interest in pursuing research, driving her to explore ways to enhance postoperative recovery and surgical outcomes. Her research interest is in understanding healthcare professionals' and patients' perspectives on pain management, particularly opioid prescription and consumption.

Jillian Schneidman is a medical student at McGill University. She holds an MPhil in Medical Anthropology from the University of Oxford, and a BSc in Rehabilitation Science from McGill University. Jillian is passionate about utilizing qualitative approaches to gain a deeper understanding of patients’ surgical experiences and needs, with the goal of improving patient-centered surgical care across the perioperative journey.

Karine Roversi, PhD

Karine Roversi is a Research Associate at the PCOR Lab. She holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Pharmacology, and a B.Sc. in Pharmacy. Her research interests center on uncovering the underlying mechanisms of different conditions such as chronic pain, cancer, and psychiatric disorders, with particular emphasis on identifying therapeutic targets. Her current research focuses on clinical trials, leveraging her expertise to advance patient-centered outcomes.

Samin Shirzadi, MD MPH

Samin Shirzadi is an International Medical Graduate with a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Saskatchewan. She serves as the Research Coordinator at the Perioperative Care and Outcomes Research (PCOR) Lab. Dedicated to improving patients' quality of care, she contributes to multiple research projects and currently oversees a multi-center Randomized Controlled Trial (PAIN-Alt Trial), which evaluates the effectiveness of opioid-free post-discharge analgesia for outpatient breast surgery.

Pepa Kaneva, MSc

Pepa Kaneva has a Master's from the School of Physical & Occupational Therapy at McGill University. She coordinates the activities of the Steinberg-Bernstein Centre for the Minimally Invasive Surgery research group. Pepa is also responsible for the development and administration of the minimally invasive program's research databases, and proctors the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic SurgeryTM (FLS) and Fundamentals of Endoscopic SurgeryTM (FES) exams.
