The Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology delivers excellence and leadership in four pillars: (i) education and training of the next generation of cancer specialists and researchers; (ii) conducting world-class, cutting-edge cancer research to better understand, prevent, and treat the disease and its sequelae; (iii) engagement with the broader scientific community, policymakers and the community at large; and (iv) advancement of all aspects of care of individuals with cancer.
The Department is involved in introducing the field of oncology to medical students and has residency training programs in medical, radiation and surgical oncology. In addition, we developed a Graduate Diploma in Oncology as well as eight new graduate level courses.
Through the Department’s various divisions and programs, our members conduct research in 8 domains, as follows: (i) Basic research focusing on understanding at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels the development and growth of tumours; (ii) Translational research for the development and testing of novel therapeutics and understanding drug resistance; (iii) Phase I, II and III clinical research studies testing the efficacy of new cancer treatment therapies; (iv) Radiation physics studies to improve the delivery of radiotherapy; (v) Genetic studies of inherited susceptibility to cancer; (vi) Epidemiologic studies of cancer etiology, prevention, and prognosis; (vii) Research aimed at improving the emotional well-being and quality of life of cancer patients and their families, and managing pain and other symptoms of the disease; (viii) Research on processes for continued improvements in the quality and cost-effectiveness of cancer care. Research findings are shared with the broader research community through publications in scientific journals and presentations at local, national and international conferences. In addition, many of our members are active on provincial, national and international committees which help shape cancer policies.
Collectively our Department members have a vast knowledge of the many complexities of cancer and many share this knowledge to the general public through media interviews and public lectures.
Despite much progress, cancer continues to be a reality. Half of all Canadians and Quebecers will be affected by cancer in their lifetime. The other half will have to care for a loved one struck by this disease. We must soldier on! Our mission is to train cancer care specialists of the future and do research to better understand the disease so that we can prevent it and continue to improve patient outcomes. Educating the next generation of healthcare professionals and scientists and carrying out relevant research are expensive endeavours whose needs greatly exceed our resources.
