It is becoming harder for people to move forward together. This is true in all human systems: organisations, communities, nations, and on global sustainable development challenges. Collaboration is increasingly necessary and increasingly difficult. Facilitation is supposed tohelp, but the two most common methodologies—subordinating everyone’s interests to the good of the whole, or enabling everyone to do their own thing—both block progress.

Transformative facilitation, which cycles back and forth between these two approaches, enables progress by removing the obstacles that stand in the way of everyone contributing and connecting equitably—removing the obstacles to the expression of power, love, and justice.

Adam Kahane is a Director of Reos Partners, an international social enterprise that helps people move forward together on their most important and intractable issues. His latest book is Facilitating Breakthrough.

This event is co-hosted with the Institute for the Study of International Development and the Leadership & Learning for Sustainability Lab.
