Supporting secondary teachers of mathematics in teaching Financial Literacy

This research project is a part of the Autorité des marchés financiers’  Quebec Financial Education Strategy, Part 2 - Learning: Youth in high school. Thus, this project will be an opportunity for high school mathematics teachers to reflect on financial education and may contribute to improving didactic practices for the young people they teach. This project also focuses on Stream 1 on the recognition of existing programs and their use.

The objectives of this research are to identify and assess the needs of high school mathematics teachers in Quebec to teach financial education. We seek to find out what they are doing in terms of financial education, and what they need  for teaching FL within their discipline. Our specific objectives are:

1. To  Identify the teaching practices used for teaching financial education in mathematics classrooms;

2. To identify what sources of information and training in financial education they use or they have  access to.

3. To identify their needs in terms of content and pedagogy regarding teaching  financial literacy so they can have the pedagogical support in terms of offering future training.

In order to answer our research questions, we hold focus groups with high school mathematics teachers and we video record some classes. We will disseminate the results of this research to a professional and scientific audience. So we will present our results when participating in professional and educational conferences that will take place in Quebec. We will also present our results to the international professional and scholarly communities through oral and written presentations.
