The Institute offers work space and support, an ongoing seminar program, contact with other professors within McGill and in neighbouring universities - all this located at the centre of a stimulating, bilingual, urban environment.

Jesalynn Keller

Jessalynn Keller
Muriel Gold Visiting Professor, Fall 2023
University of Calgary

Jessalynn Keller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media, Communication, and Film at the University of Calgary, Canada. She is the author of Girls’ Feminist Blogging in a Postfeminist Age (Routledge 2015), co-editor of Emergent Feminisms: Complicating a Postfeminist Media Culture (Routledge 2018) and co-author of Digital Feminist Activism (Oxford University Press 2019). Her research on feminist digital media cultures have also been published in journals that include Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, Social Media + Society, New Media & Society, Journal of Gender Studies, and Feminist Media Studies.

During her tenure as the Muriel Gold Visiting Professor Dr. Keller will be working on a new SSHRC-funded book project, tentatively titled Stories of the Feminist Internet: A Cultural History of the Feminist Blogosphere, 1999-2016. This research seeks to understand how the North American feminist blogosphere operated as a networked media economy to develop and circulate feminist discourse on the Internet and extend collective feminist media-making practices into the digital environment, serving as an oft-overlooked foundation for the development and success of contemporary social media feminist activism, such as #MeToo. Guided by principles of intersectional feminist methods, the book draws upon interviews with bloggers in order to re-center the contributions of BIPOC and queer bloggers whose practices were foundational to the millennium feminist Internet.
