Mining Engineering (PhD)

Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mining Engineering offered by the Department of Mining & Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering is a research-intensive program that emphasizes focused and engaging learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in literature review, statistical analysis, and research dissemination to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.

Unique Program Features

  • The primary objective of the program is to train students to become leaders in their field: to show familiarity with that field, to carry out, to organize original research and to contribute to the knowledge base. As such, student’s spend most of their time conducting research though some classes are still required;
  • Noted as the oldest mining program in Canada (founded in 1871) and consistently ranks as one of the top mining engineering programs in the world (QS World University Rankings by Subject: Engineering - Mineral & Mining);
  • Graduate work in a variety of areas including mining operations, the financial industry (such as the Toronto Stock Exchange seen as the focal point of global mining finance), consultancy services, heavy equipment manufacturing, research institutions, and government agencies.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
