McGill has adopted a new Policy on the Use and Quality of the French Language. Under the policy, the University intends to implement measures to support students in acquiring command of the French language by the end of their studies. French proficiency is a distinct advantage for research collaborations with local partners, internships and mobility opportunities during the degree. A good command of French would also facilitate transition to the Quebec labour market at the end of the degree.
GPS is launching a pilot project to offer French courses to doctoral students, starting in September 2023. The pilot group will include doctoral awardees from the Fall 2021 and Fall 2022 FRQ competitions. The French courses will be offered during the academic year (3 hours/week, on evenings) at no cost to the student. A placement test is required to confirm the appropriate course level for each student.
