While in Glasgow, Scotland, Graham Barber, Director of Global Engagement, presented a commemorative gift to Andy Schofield, Principal of the University of Glasgow, on behalf of President Deep Saini and the McGill community. The presentation marked the University of Glasgow's 575th anniversary and celebrated the enduring relationship between two institutions connected by history, academic excellence, and a shared commitment to advancing knowledge for the benefit of society.
The gift, a sculpture of an Inukshuk created by renowned Inuit carver Isaac Sala, from the community of Sanikiluaq (Nunavut), serves as a symbol of guidance, cooperation, and human connection across great distances. Traditionally used as landmarks throughout the Arctic, Inukshuks help travellers find their way and support one another on shared journeys. Presented in the spirit of friendship and partnership, the sculpture reflects the strong bonds that continue to unite the McGill and Glasgow communities.
As research-intensive universities with global outlooks, McGill and the University of Glasgow have long shared common values, including a commitment to academic excellence, international collaboration, and the pursuit of knowledge. Over the years, the partnership has fostered student mobility, research collaboration, and meaningful connections between faculty, researchers, and students on both sides of the Atlantic.
The gift presentation symbolized not only a celebration of the University of Glasgow's distinguished past, but also confidence in the future of a relationship that continues to grow and evolve. As both institutions seek new opportunities for collaboration in research, education, innovation, and global engagement, they remain united by a shared belief in the power of universities to contribute to solutions for global challenges and create positive impact in the world.
As the University of Glasgow celebrates 575 years of learning, discovery, and service, McGill is proud to recognize this milestone and looks forward to deepening a longstanding and special partnership for generations to come.
