Practice Management

PREM

To practise in Quebec, you are required to have a position in compliance with the regional physician resource plans (Plans régionaux d’effectifs médicaux, or PREMs).

PREMs in all specialties are posted on the ministry’s web site. A given establishment's physician resource plan is called a PEM. The FMRQ has detailed the steps for obtaining a PEM in an establishment.

MSSS - Current and projected GIM positions in the province of Quebec for 2017 (updated 2017-02-22)

File July 2017 GIM Quebec PEM List Summary (by administrative region)

Jobs in the Rest of Canada (ROC)

There are many GIM job opportunities across Canada from sea to shining sea, as well as some job-finding resources/databases. Admittedly, the following list is not exhaustive (although you may find it exhausting). However, you will see there are many opportunities!  As said previously: there are plenty of GIM jobs across the country!

The list skews towards community hospital opportunities. Many university teaching hospital positions are not posted, and require contacting division directors (or their administrative assistant) directly.  As GIM division directors are usually at CSIM for national meetings, going to CSIM is a good way to network. That being said, a number of community hospitals have deep and active university affiliations (centre hospitalier affilié) like the JGH, Sacré-Coeur or L’Enfant-Jésus.

Clinician Investigator Program (CIP)

The McGill Clinical Investigator Program (CIP) is a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accredited program that provides 2 years of formal research training to residents who want to pursue a career in clinical or basic science research and academia. CIP is a great opportunity for residents to develop their passion for research. Each research project is unique and tailored to the resident’s interest and their subspecialty program.

Residents must select their research supervisor and project prior to applying to CIP. The research goals for each resident are tailored to their research question and hypothesis, which are different for each project. The roles of the research supervisor, the CIP director and the CIP residency committee are to foster this research interest and to provide mentorship and guidance. Compared to the graduate programs, CIP provides residents with a structured curriculum and close supervision that closely monitors the residents’ progress. This is to ensure that the residents complete their objectives during the time they spend in CIP. Residents within CIP also benefit from having protected research time and the necessary resources to acquire all the basic requirements to become a successful clinician scientist.
