Sustainability in the GIC
At the GIC, our goal is to be a workplace that is mindful of its environmental impact and helps to promote sustainable living amongst our staff and patrons. The GIC is proud to have received the Silver Sustainable Workplace Certification from the McGill Office of Sustainability, and looks forward to continuing to advance our social, economic and environmental sustainability practices.
The GIC is proudly a silver-certified sustainable workspace.
What can you do to support our sustainability efforts?
Go outside for meals/breaks
- Getting outside can help lower stress and promote happiness, and staying active can improve your overall well-being. So, when the weather permits, go enjoy the sunshine.
Turn off computers when leaving
- Just finished that late-night GEOG 201 lab grind? Nice! Before you head home, please properly turn off the desktop computer you were working at. By doing so, you can help to save energy and ensure our computers last longer.
Notice something leaking?
- Leaky faucet in the washroom? Water dripping from somewhere it shouldn't be? Please let one of our team members know immediately so that we can quickly resolve the issue and ensure we waste as little water as possible.
Turn in spent batteries
- Have a pile of empty batteries at home that you aren't sure what to do with? Bring them to the GIC, where we will handle the proper recycling for you.
Sustainability at McGill
The GIC is a proud supporter of the McGill Climate and Sustainability Strategy. One way for students and staff to get involved in campus sustainability initiatives is through participation in the Sustainability Projects Fund. Provided by the McGill Office of Sustainability, the fund provides $1 million annually to support both large and small sustainability projects at McGill, with projects receiving from $300 to over $100,000 depending upon the needs and scope of the endeavour. Please visit the Sustainability Projects Fund website for further information regarding application deadlines and submission requirements.
