Jewish General Hospital

Jewish General HospitalThe Jewish General Hospital is a 637-bed tertiary care facility that first opened in 1933. In addition to serving a diverse clientele, it also serves a population where over 20% are older than 65, the largest percentage among the McGill teaching hospitals.

The Division of Geriatric Medicine has a 32-bed acute care ward that primarily admits patients from the emergency room, as well as from other parts of the hospital and occasionally directly from the community. Consultation services are offered to the Emergency Department and for in-patients on other services.

The Division operates several outpatient clinics, including the Geriatric Assessment Unit (GAU), the Memory Clinic, the Falls and Fracture Prevention Clinic, and the Geriatric Oncology Clinic. The GAU employs a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, involving geriatricians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers. The multidisciplinary team regularly conducts home visits.

The Anne and Louis Goldfrab Jewish General Hospital/McGill University Memory Clinic includes geriatricians, neurologists, neuropsychologists, and nurses who have a special interest in evaluating and treating early memory impairment.

The Geriatric Oncology Clinic promotes a comprehensive approach to caring for older patients with cancer and their families by collaborating with the treating teams to develop an individualized, integrated care plan and make recommendations based on a multidimensional assessment.

The Falls and Fracture Prevention Clinic emphasizes identifying risk factors for falls and fractures in older adults. The team develops a care plan with multidisciplinary interventions. This includes innovative interventions such as a WHO-endorsed home exercise program (www.vivifrail.com) and the recently introduced gym for seniors (DURAgym), which is run in collaboration with our Centre of Excellence (Schouela CEDurable www.cedurable.ca), which is also hosted by the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the JGH and the CIUSSS Centre Ouest de Montreal.

Research in the fields of memory (dementia and MCI), pharmaco-epidemiology, oncogeriatrics, health services, musculoskeletal issues (such as falls, fractures, and muscle and bone health), and nutrition is conducted at the Jewish General Hospital. Clinical trials take place at the satellite Geroscience Clinical Trials Unit located at the same hospital.
