Dr. Richard Garfinkle
Appointed to the Division of General Surgery
at McGill University


Dear Colleagues,

The McGill Division of General Surgery is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Richard Garfinkle as a Colon and Rectal Surgeon at the Jewish General Hospital in September 2024. His particular interests include robotic surgery and the surgical management of primary and recurrent rectal cancer. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Garfinkle is appointed as a researcher at the Lady Davis Institute and will lead the Colorectal Surgery Outcomes Research Group at the JGH.

Dr. Garfinkle’s academic and professional journey reflects an unwavering commitment to excellence in both surgery and research. He earned his medical degree from McGill University, where he also completed a General Surgery Residency, a Master’s in Epidemiology followed by a PhD in Experimental Surgery. He further honed his expertise with a Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency in 2023 at the renowned Mayo Clinic. His research has centered on Low Anterior Resection Syndrome, colorectal cancer and diverticulitis, and has led to an impressive body of work comprising over 67 peer-reviewed publications, several invited manuscripts, and contributions to three authoritative textbook chapters.

Dr. Garfinkle’s work has garnered numerous prestigious awards and grants. Most notably, he received the 2024 Quebec Health Research Foundation’s (FRQS) Resident Physician Health Research Career Training Program Phase 2 award, providing substantial funding for his post-doctoral research. His early career research endeavors have also been supported by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Career Development Award, a recognition for promising surgeons, and the Carole and Myer Bick Clinician Scientist Catalyst Award from the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital. He has received important research grants from the SAGES, the Canadian Society of Colorectal Surgeons (CSCRS), a Cancer Quality and Improvement Grant from the Rossy Cancer Network.

In addition to his research excellence, Dr. Garfinkle has earned acclaim for his teaching and professionalism. He has received the CAGS Excellence in Teaching Award, the Marvin Wexler Outstanding Resident Award, the Department of Surgery’s Rising Star award and the SAGES Foundation Gerald Marks Rectal Cancer Award, as well as the prestigious Alexander D. Stewart Prize, awarded in medical school to the member of the graduating class who, in the opinion of the Faculty, presents in every respect the highest qualifications to practice the profession. These accolades underscore his dedication to his craft and his commitment to educating and mentoring the next generation of surgeons.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Garfinkle to the Jewish General Hospital and McGill University. His expertise, innovative research, and passion for surgical education will be invaluable assets to our division and the larger department of surgery. Dr. Garfinkle’s appointment reinforces our commitment to providing the highest standard of care and advancing the field of colorectal surgery through excellence in practice, research and education.
