Meet the Grads 2023: Tannis Nelson

As part of our Back to School 2023 coverage, we asked some incoming Family Medicine graduate students to share their first impressions with us. Here we meet Tannis Nelson.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a first year Master’s student. I recently completed my undergraduate degree with honours in Biology at Mount Allison University. I grew up in the West Island and recently moved to Montreal. I enjoy being outdoors and being active including sports such as swimming and running.

What program will you be studying at the Department of Family Medicine?

I will be doing a Masters in Family Medicine under the supervision of Dr. Tracie Barnett.

Why did you choose to study at McGill’s Family Medicine program?

During my undergrad my interest in family medicine and primary care increased after listening to some guest speakers and I found the family medicine program at McGill that conducted research in these areas. I was also very interested when I started reading about the research being done in the department especially that of Dr.Barnett.

What are your favourite things to do in Montreal?

My favourite thing to do in Montreal is to go and try new restaurants.

What are your expectations for the year ahead?

I’m looking forward to developing my research skills through our various courses as well as making new connections.

What are your career goals?

I am currently undecided, however I am interested in medicine as well as working in public health.

Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine Tannis - we are glad to have you!
