Mongeau, L., BSc (UdeM), MSc (UdeM), PhD (Penn State)

Dr. Luc Mongeau is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University since 2006. He obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal in 2004 and 2006, respectively. He obtained a Ph.D. from the Graduate Program in Acoustics at the Pennsylvania State University in 1991. He then was a postdoctoral researcher at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, before joining the faculty of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in 1993. His research has spanned a variety of topics related to acoustics, including wind noise in road vehicles, thermoacoustic refrigeration, aeroacoustics of flight vehicles, passive and active noise and vibration control, combustion noise, flow- and friction induced vibrations, turbomachinery noise, and the aerodynamics and biomechanics of voice production. This work has been supported by Industry (Ford, Exa, Daimler Chrysler, Decoma, AES, Boeing, Caterpillar) as well as government agencies (NIH, NSF, NASA, ONR, FAA, NSERC, FCI, and others). His research has resulted in over eighty refereed journal publications, and one hundred conference publications. His papers were cited a total of 674 times (on average 90 times per year since 2007) for an h-index of 15 in ISI Web of Knowledge. He has supervised thirty M.S. and Ph.D. students. He is a Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is also a Member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, a Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a Member of the Voice Foundation, and a Member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec.

At the present time, his research team includes two postdoctoral research fellows, nine doctoral students, two Masters students, eleven McGill undergraduate summer research students, and two visiting undergraduate international students. He is the lead Principal Investigator of large scale study funded by the National Institutes of Health in the United States. This project, started in 2008 and ending in 2013, involves four Universities and five investigators, for a total budget of 2.3 million dollars. The project involves tissue engineering of the vocal folds, imaging of the extracellular matrix component of soft tissues, and the mechano-biology of vocal fold tissue. He also receives funding as a subcontract to other NIH-funded studies, as well as financial support for local Montreal-based Aerospace companies. He has served McGill’s Faculty of Engineering as Associate Dean Academic Affairs for three years. He has served the Department of Mechanical Engineering as Director of Graduate Admissions and Fellowships for three years, and as Graduate Program Director since 2011. He is a member of the ICAO independent panel expert on aircraft noise emissions. He will be the technical Chair of the International Congress of Acoustics in Montreal, June 2-7 2012. He is Associate Editor for the Journal of Voice and the International Journal of Aeroacoustics. He was a guest instructor for the IUTAM Summer School on the Biomechanics of Soft Tissue at Purdue University in June 2012.
