For the second consecutive year, McGill University is tied for 27th place among the best all-around higher education institutions in the world, according to the QS World University Rankings. McGill excels in the six major areas reflected in the rankings: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio.

Business insider has published a list of the cities with the world’s top-50 universities according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Included on the list are Montreal and McGill University, thanks to Montreal’s quality of life, the Underground City, the festivals, the Biodome, the botanical garden and various other niceties. As for McGill, the piece credits the school’s reputation as a leading research institution and its social sciences department as major factors.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are out for this year, and McGill maintains its place as number 42 in the world. McGill is one of only three Canadian schools in the top 50 and six in the top 200. Phil Baty of Times Higher Education called the fact that Canadian schools were holding steady this year a real plus, saying that “You really have to run fast to stand still in this context of intense global competition.” In contrast, not only did top-ranked US school Caltech lose its number-2 spot this year, but American schools across the board slipped in the rankings.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings data reveal the top 200 most outward-looking institutions. McGill University ranks 76, second in Canada after University of British Columbia at 40th.

McGill University is the only Quebec university to make the top 100 in the 2015-16 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. McGill was ranked 38th overall out of the 800 universities ranked worldwide, placing one rank better than it did last year. Université de Montréal was ranked 113th, Université de Laval was in the low 200s, and both Concordia University and Université du Québec à Montréal were ranked in the 400s. Université de Sherbrooke ranked in the 500s.

Twenty-five Canadian universities have been ranked in the top 800 worldwide by Times Higher Education. The University of Toronto (19), University of British Columbia (34) and McGill University (38) are once again the top three Canadian institutions in the annual World University Ranking.

It may not be the comeback story of the century, but McGill University’s resurgence to the No. 1 position in the latest QS World University Rankings has offered a glimmer of hope when many had predicted nothing but a continual slide down the international rankings scale for the “Harvard of the north.”
