In the 2025 Major League Baseball playoffs, the Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff has often looked dominant, even against some of the best batters in the world. Sam Greene (BCom’20, MMA’21) has helped them do it. A former varsity baseball player at McGill, Greene started out in baseball research for the Blue Jays and became an Assistant Pitching Coach in 2024. “Sam Greene is a geek, but many of the pitchers on this team are too,” said Chris Bassitt, a Blue Jays pitcher who has excelled as a middle reliever in the playoffs.
As part of the first graduating cohort of McGill’s Master of Management in Analytics (Online) program, Hari Gopalan (MMA’25) is using data to improve healthcare systems at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Applying insights gained from the program, he’s developed models to optimize exam scheduling and forecast waitlists, driving measurable improvements in patient care. Hari credits the MMA for expanding his technical and problem-solving skills, and for connecting him to a network of analytics professionals across industries.
After four years studying in Montreal, Sam Greene (BCOM’20, MMA’21) moved on to Toronto, where he caught on with Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays. Greene started in a role in an analytics role, but has since been named assistant pitching coach. As a junior member of the coashing staff, Greene is observing senior coaches like pitching coach Pete Walker and bullpen coach Graeme Johnson. “I’m specialized in using the advanced statistics we receive each match,” says Greene. “I contribute by guiding pitch choice and suggesting ways of approaching individual hitters.
In baseball, data is of paramount importance. Since graduating from the Master of Management Analytics program, Sam Greene (MMA’21) has been applying the analytical skills he developed at McGill Desautels as a researcher with the Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball club. In 2025, Greene will be even closer to the action as he takes on a new position as Assistant Pitching Coach for the team.

Students from the McGill Master of Management in Analytics (MMA) program recently teamed up with the Montreal Children’s Hospital to analyze telehealth services and plan personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies. As part of the program’s MMA Gives initiative, Omar Chehab, Katia Sory, Victoria McKeown and Kyle Gomes (MMA’20) gained meaningful experience helping the hospital plan and adapt to their new reality brought on by COVID-19.
