This is the wild idea of Henry Mintzberg, internationally renowned management academic and professor of management studies at McGill University.
Four students have set up a school in a refugee camp near the Iraqi city of Dohuk, the first of its kind within this camp. Having met through an online course run by the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University in Canada, the students from Morocco – the world’s first online course specifically designed for group learning (also known as GROOC) – the students from Morocco, the UK, Iraq and Canada established the Heart ELT (English Language Teaching) School.

I had always been slightly skeptical about online jobs but I’ve never been so sure about the influence of the Internet until now. This course has made it possible for thousands of people from around the globe to connect, regardless of age, social background, pre-requisites, and location.

The Desautels Faculty of Management launched a world’s first on September 16, coining a new word in the process. According to the people who put the course together, “Social Learning for Social Impact” is the very first GROOC (Group MOOC), a new massive open online course that’s designed to foster social collaboration, interaction and learning.

À travers un MOOC (massive open online course, ou cours en ligne ouvert à tous) pour groupes, les professeurs derrière le projet, Henry Mintzberg, Leslie Breitner et Anita Nowak , révolutionnent les codes de la classe traditionnelle pour initier une discussion sur l’initiative sociale.

World’s first Group MOOC set to ignite global social change
Now we can call a MOOC for what it is: Missed Opportunity for Online Collaboration. Otherwise known as the Massive Online Open Course, the MOOC possesses a major downside – students get flexibility and independence in their studies, and even the freedom to learn – usually for free – while wearing nothing but last week’s underwear, but usually work without the benefit of team-based collaboration.
