MONTREAL - Gideon Balloch of Ottawa and Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 6, 2011.

Balloch, a 6-foot, 185-pound winger on the men's rugby team, scored 13 points as McGill defeated Concordia 28-7 to capture the RSEQ provincial men's rugby championship at Molson Stadium, Sunday. The fifth-year mechanical engineering senior, scored one try, a pair of penalty goals and one conversion. A Quebec conference all-star who won the RSEQ scoring race, the 22-year-old Balloch notched the game's first 11 points, including the game-winning try to give the division-leading Redmen an almost insurmountable 11-0 lead by the 52nd minute of play. He enrolled at McGill in 2007 from the International School of Beijing.

Bettez, a 5-foot-4 forward with the women's hockey team, scored both of McGill's goals last week, including the game-winner at 12:29 of the third period in a 1-0 shutout over Concordia last Sunday. The 24-year-old also netted McGill's lone goal in a 2-1 loss at Syracuse on Nov. 5. She returned for a fifth season after graduating with a B.Com last spring and is now enrolled in a public relations management certificate. Bettez, a product of Dawson College, has also had a few stints with the Canadian national program.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
