Effects of cigarette smoke and other air pollutants on CFTR function

In addition to loss-of-function mutations in cftr, prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke leads to an acquired CFTR deficiency that may account for some similarities between COPD and cystic fibrosis symptoms. Acute exposure to smoke stimulates CFTR-dependent secretion. We will determine the mechanisms of CFTR regulation by pollutants and the role of oxidative stress during both stimulation and inhibition.

While this web page is accessible worldwide, McGill University is on land which has served and continues to serve as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. We acknowledge and thank the diverse Indigenous peoples whose footsteps mark this territory on which peoples of the world now gather. This land acknowledgement is shared as a starting point to provide context for further learning and action.
