Elections in Troubled Times: The 2025 Canadian Election in Historical Perspective Webinar

Tuesday, May 20, 2025 16:00to18:00

Join MISC at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, May 20th for an online Zoom webinar, Elections in Troubled Times: The 2025 Canadian Election in Historical Perspective.

The 2025 election has triggered all sorts of analyses and interpretations and inevitably raises a key question: how did it compare with past "turning point" contests. In this online session, MISC brings together four authors who have recently written books on the 1867, 1921, 1945 and 1993 elections--four campaigns that concluded with new governments that had lasting impacts. What are the parallels? How were things different? Patrice Dutil, Barbara Messamore, David MacKenzie, Tom Flanagan and Ken Carty will answer Dr. Jennifer Elrick's moderator questions as well as those from the audience.

Ken Carty is co-director of the Turning Point Election Series at the University of British Columbia Press, along with Gerald Baier. He is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of British Columbia. Carty’s scholarship has been primarily concerned with political parties and electoral systems and he has published widely on politics in Europe, Canada and Australia.

Patrice Dutil is the author of Ballots and Brawls: The 1867 Canadian General Election. He is a Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Toronto Metropolitan University. His books have covered many aspects of political and public service leadership, intellectual history, as well as studies of the 1911 and 1917 elections.

Tom Flanagan is the author of Pivot or Pirouette?: The 1993 Canadian General Election. He is Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Fellow at the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. He is the author of many books and articles on topics such as Louis Riel and Metis history, aboriginal rights and land claims, Canadian political parties, political campaigning, and applications of game theory to politics.

David MacKenzie is the author of King and Chaos: The 1935 Canadian General Election. He is a professor of history at Toronto Metropolitan University. He is author of several books on Canadian foreign policy, the history of international organizations, as well as studies of the 1911 and 1917 elections.

Barbara Messamore is the author of Times of Transformation: the 1921 Canadian General Election. She is professor of History and department chair at University of the Fraser Valley, British Columbia. She is the author of many books of various aspects of constitutional history, especially the role of the Crown and currently serves as President of the Institute for the Study of the Crown in Canada.
