Find an Internship

You are responsible for finding your own internship, but we can help. Below, you'll find a list of steps to follow, criteria to look for, and a list of previous internship hosts. Please note that we encourage you to look for the internship opportunities that align with your own career plans. 

Steps to find your internship 

  1. Identify your goals
    • Complete your IDP to identify your goals and expectations for the internship experience
  2. Locate your own internship
    • Use your network
    • Refer to McGill resources (myFuture, speak with professors and advisors, etc.)
    • Browse online (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.)
    • Pick up the phone and cold call the company you are interested in
  3. Apply to the internship
    • Research, plan ahead and persevere

Criteria for Internships

  • The company or organization must be legitimate
  • Should ideally be 3 months in length (minimum of 1 month)
  • Interns may work the legal maximum (equivalent to full-time work) each week, which is dependent on their immigration status within the country of work. 
  • Interns should be conducting high-level, meaningful work appropriate to their level of education and expertise
  • Must gain valuable experience from the opportunity
  • A clear job description with defined tasks and objectives
