You are responsible for finding your own internship, but we can help. Below, you'll find a list of steps to follow, criteria to look for, and a list of previous internship hosts. Please note that we encourage you to look for the internship opportunities that align with your own career plans.
Steps to find your internship
- Identify your goals
- Complete your IDP to identify your goals and expectations for the internship experience
- Locate your own internship
- Use your network
- Refer to McGill resources (myFuture, speak with professors and advisors, etc.)
- Browse online (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.)
- Pick up the phone and cold call the company you are interested in
- Apply to the internship
- Research, plan ahead and persevere
Criteria for Internships
- The company or organization must be legitimate
- Should ideally be 3 months in length (minimum of 1 month)
- Interns may work the legal maximum (equivalent to full-time work) each week, which is dependent on their immigration status within the country of work.
- Interns should be conducting high-level, meaningful work appropriate to their level of education and expertise
- Must gain valuable experience from the opportunity
- A clear job description with defined tasks and objectives
