Abstract: The current pandemic has shown the important role mathematical models play in forecasting the spread of an infectious disease, as well as in understanding the factors shaping its progression. In this lecture, I will review some basic epidemiological models and discuss their shortcomings when it comes to modeling the spread of infectious diseases like to COVID-19. I will then introduce the framework of contact network epidemiology and show how it can overcome many of these shortcomings. Using various case studies, I will show how to use this framework and illustrate what can we learn by doing so.
