Kanien'kehá:ka Ironworkers: Wahiakeron (George) Gilbert & Jaxson Robinson (hybrid)

Monday, March 23, 2026, from noon to 1:00 p.m.McLennan Library Building (3459 McTavish Street, Montreal, Quebec H3A 0C9), fourth floor, Rare Books and Special Collections, Colgate Room

Since the late nineteenth century, ironworking has been central to the livelihood and legacy of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Generations of Ratirihstakéhronon (ironworkers) have travelled across North America, shaping skylines with skill, courage, and deep community ties. In conjunction with the lobby exhibition Sky-High Trust: Kanien'kehá:ka Ironworkers photographed by David Grant Noble presented by the Visual Arts Collection, this lunchtime talk brings together two ironworkers from different generations to share stories, knowledge, and lived experience from this powerful lineage of ironworkers. Event organized in collaboration with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

Volunteers wanted for a Research Study

A researcher at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre, Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta, is doing a research project to try to help people with type 2 diabetes and their partner get more active.

Being active is one way to achieve better blood sugar control and heart health in type 2 diabetes. It can be useful for the person with diabetes to have support while reaching their activity goals. Their partner might be a good person to help. Partners of people with type 2 diabetes are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Therefore, there are good reasons to work together!

Some couples in the project will also participate in online coaching sessions where they will work together to communicate more kindly and effectively. We will see if the couples with these sessions wind up having more steps and better blood sugar control than the people who do not.

  • Do you have type 2 diabetes?
  • Are you 45 years of age or older?
  • Do you and your partner want to work together to increase your physical activity?

If your answer is "yes" to these questions, you may be interested in our Partner Step T2D study.

Participants and their partners will be asked to:

  • Go to the MUHC Glen Hospital for 2 visits
  • Wear a step counter
  • Potentially do 8 online or in-person coaching sessions

If you are interested to join the research project, please visit our website, where you may send your information to be contacted for interest in the study.

Or, directly contact the research coordinator, Debora, at 438-346-0479 or partnerstept2d [at] muhc.mcgill.ca
