McGill’s all-in commitment to sustainability is expressed at an extraordinary level with the development of the $870M Sustainability Park. Sustainability Systems form one of the three pillars of the Sustainability Park Academic Plan, along with Teaching & Learning and Public Policy. The Sustainability Park will provide the largest single sustainability and public policy research facility in the World.
The MSSI and the Sustainability Park are two sides of the same coin. It has always been intended that the MSSI would be the eventual organizing structure of the research activity to be undertaken in the Sustainability Park. The MSSI's first three research themes are identical to the the Sustainability Park's sustainability clusters—Molecular/Materials Systems, Earth Systems, and Urban Systems. The MSSI was designed in tandem with the Sustainability Park, with the MSSI as the "software" to be installed in the "hardware" of the Sustainability Park when it opens in 2030.
