Utility

Clinical and research settings

It is used to assess the different coping strategies people use in response to stress. It is a multidimensional measure that consists of 60 items and 15 first-order factors (4 items each).

The inventory includes some responses that are expected to be dysfunctional and some that are expected to be functional.

Versions available for the measure

Available in 3 formats:

  • The dispositional format, in which respondents report the extent to which they usually do the things listed
  • A time-limited version, in which respondents indicate the degree to which they have been having each response during a period up to the present.
  • A time-limited version, in which respondents indicate the degree to which they actually did have each response during a particular period in the past.

A brief version also exists; The brief COPE inventory consisting of 28 statements.
