In 1997, a modified version of the PBI called the MOPS or Measure of Parenting Style was developed. The older version had some double negatives that caused confusion. All items in the modified version are constructed in a direct way. The number of items has also increased. Lastly, an abuse scale has been added as well.

In this 'retrospective' measure, adults (over 16 years of age) answer questions about how they remember their parents as children. The measure is designed to assess two fundamental parenting styles including ‘care’ and ‘overprotection’ or ‘control’.

The measure has to be separately completed for both mothers and fathers.
