Image Caption:
There are many, many species of hawthorn native to Québec. They are all small trees and usually found in old fields or along forest edges, but not in the forest understory. Although it is easy to tell if you are looking at a hawthorn, it is very hard to tell which species is which within the genus. All the native hawthorns have large, woody thorns on the branches, toothed and lobed leaf edges, and small flowers with five white petals and bloom in May. The red fruits, which are very tart, are red and are sometimes made into jelly. Like Amelanchiers, cherries, plums, and mountain ashes, hawthorns are in the rose family.
