The bright orange fruits of mountain ash proclaim its presence from far away. It is in the rose family, and has small white flower clusters in the early summer. There are two species that are native, both look very similar. American mountain ash, pictured here, has thinner leaves than the showy mountain ash. Both are small trees that are often found on rocky hillsides or next to water. Although the fruits are edible and are sometimes made into jam, the flavour is very strong! It is also sometimes called by the name rowen tree.
