Image Caption:
In bygone days, white elms were a common tree along Montréal streets. They still occur on the island, but rarely will be large because of the prevalence of Dutch elm disease, which affects larger specimens more than smaller trees. The leaves of elms are asymmetrical, and each vein ends at a tooth. The upper side of the leaves of young trees are scratchy-textured.
