Image Caption:
Red elm is found in wet forests, and its leaves are rough on both sides, even on mature trees. Red elm gets its name from the bark colour: if you take a small cross section, it will be a reddish brown. White elm has alternating layers of beige and reddish brown bark in contrast, this feature gives that species its name too! Other species of elms are planted, and Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) which is often used as a hedge species, is commonly found in Montréal where it has naturalized. The leaves of Siberian elm are narrower, and very small (2-7 cm) in contrast to red and white elm leaves (10-20 cm).
