Like trembling aspen, balsam poplar is found growing up to the tree line, and is close to its southern distribution limit in Montréal. They have a narrower leaf shape than the other poplars of the Montréal region. They have a strong, aromatic smell. Their buds are covered in a very sticky resin which is the source of their aroma.
