Editing and Revising your own work

As easy as it is to critique and find compelling ways to improve the scholarly work you read, it is surprisingly difficult to apply this same quality of critique to your own writing.  At times, indeed, it seems impossible to so much as catch typos in your own work, not to mention large logical gaps and glaringly poor moments of argumentation. In this workshop you will learn techniques for editing your work as well as practice some of the necessary skills to that end.

Participate in this workshop and you will:

  • Introduced to editing and revising rules to live by
  • Learn how to approach your writing as an outsider to improve clarity
  • Practice revising and editing your own scholarly work

You should come to the workshop with:

  • 2 hard copies of a 2-page excerpt from a scholarly document you have written, e.g., dissertation, article draft, conference paper.  The text does not need to be polished, rather it should be in the form of a solid first draft.

This workshop will be led by Dr. Gretchen Bakke who is a professor in the Anthropology Department and an experienced academic writing consultant.

The workshop will be held on McGill's downtown campus on Friday, March 20, from 10 am to 12 pm.  Registrants will receive the workshop location in a confirmation email.
