Healthcare in Quebec

There are a variety of ways to access healthcare services in Quebec. If you are having trouble navigating the healthcare landscape, the Student Wellness Hub's Access Advisors and/or Local Wellness Advisors may connect you with the appropriate resources on-campus or off-campus. Similarly, the Student Wellness Hub curates a webpage dedicated to navigating healthcare in Quebec which compiles information and advice related to accessing off-campus care.

If you are unsure how your health and/or dental insurance impacts your access to healthcare off-campus, PGSS has assembled an interactive PDF guide for Resources & Services for Graduate Students to help you. Additionally, the Student Wellness Hub provides an interactive Health & Wellness Resource map that allows you to search for specific services based on your particular health and/or dental insurance plan.

The Student Wellness Hub has also compiled a comprehensive list of clinics and services in the vicinity of both campuses (Downtown and Macdonald).

Prescription medication(s)

Prescriptions originating from outside Quebec cannot be filled by a pharmacist once here. It is important to bring at least a six-month supply of your prescribed medication with you. If you are from elsewhere in Quebec (e.g., far from your prescribing doctor), ensure that your prescription has at least six renewals. If you require a follow-up, provide the Student Wellness Hub with a referral from your doctor as soon as possible.

Follow-up care from a specialist

If you require follow-up care from a medical specialist, be sure to get a referral from your family doctor prior to arriving. It is important to get on the wait list to see a medical specialist (e.g., dermatologist, allergist, general surgeon) as soon possible. Pressures on the Quebec healthcare system contribute to extended wait times to get an appointment with a medical specialist.

Long-term psychotherapy, therapy, and consultations

A variety of resources are available both on- and off-campus. To connect with the appropriate resource in Montreal, consult the Student Wellness Hub. Services available at the Student Wellness Hub are typically offered in a short-term capacity. This includes access to mental health professionals such as Counsellors, Local Wellness Advisors, Psychiatrists, and Sexologists.
